‘We will remember’ – Neco Williams coming-of-age screens gush Wales fans as Liverpool send message
Liverpool defender Neco Williams was a timely reminder of his astonishing talents with two fascinating performances for Wales during the last international break.
The 20-year-old scored his second goal for his country in a 5-1 loss to Belarus before playing a leading role in a 1-1 draw with Belgium which saw Wales win a semi-final of the World Cup play-offs at home.
Williams now has 17 international caps under his belt, which is remarkably just 11 games short of his total club appearances for Liverpool since his debut for the senior Reds in the Carabao Cup against Arsenal in October 2019.
He has 267 minutes of action under his belt for the Red Dragons so far this quarter, compared to just 107 for his club.
But his lack of regular playing time on a weekly basis hasn’t done much to slow the all-round winger when it comes to his performance on the international stage.
Discussing Williams ‘monumental effort against Belgium, former Welsh international David Cotterill wrote on Twitter: “Neco Williams has been @FAWales’ best player in the last two games. Great result for Wales tonight , with a view to the playoffs. “
And in commenting on the competition on Sky Sports, former Wales defender Danny Gabbidon said: “Neco Williams has been absolutely outstanding tonight.”
Times chief football writer Henry Winter said: “Right or left, fullback, fullback or winger, Neco Williams looks like a real prospect.
“Intrepid, great energy, driving races, goals too. Outstanding for Wales against Belarus, then Belgium. Only 20. And congratulations to #Cymru for reaching the # WorldCup2022 qualifiers – as that seeded. “

Fans were also in awe of the youngster’s performance as Wales took second in Group E ahead of the Czech Republic.
Welsh Fan Zone TV said: “Home game outside a draw. I needed a point against the world No. 1. Go see Neco Williams in a Cymru kit for the next 13 years or more.
Cymru Watch commented: “We will remember this international break as Neco Williams took it to the next level.”
Ninian Opinion wrote on Twitter: “Phenomenal from Wales. The pressing, the pace of the work, the willingness to stick with it. Absolutely fantastic all of them, but Neco Williams and the big man up front were exceptional. One man proud. “
Anfield Edition posted: “Neco Williams with another fantastic performance for Wales tonight as a left-back role. He seems to be finding his feet.”
Llion Rhys said: “Neco Williams really needs to play regular football, he was exceptional tonight, what a week he has had! He’s way too good not to play regular football, such an exciting prospect!”
And Matt Harrison wrote: “Neco Williams tonight by the way … wow … and I should add ‘more’. I really hope he gets to play football somewhere.”
Williams is among a group of Welsh players who could spark an interest in transfers in January ahead of the World Cup qualifiers in March.
But on the evidence of his latest performances in the Wales red, Rob Page can be assured that he has immense talent in his ranks when it comes to the Wrexham-born star.
