Stephen Kenny dealt a blow to Michael Obafemi ahead of Ukraine showdown
A blow for Ireland.
Ireland boss Stephen Kenny has revealed that Michael Obafemi is set to miss Ireland’s Nations League game against Ukraine.
Obafemi was sent off against Scotland on Saturday night through injury and has now been ruled out of Tuesday night’s draw in Lodz, Poland.
Although not entirely unexpected, the Swansea City star’s groin problems did not heal in time for Ukraine.
However, Kenny revealed he had more hope for the fitness of Chiedozie Ogbene who sat out Saturday’s 3-0 win at home to the Scots at the Aviva.
“His overall performance for Swansea towards the end of the season was the best of our strikers..”
On Saturday night, Obafemi scored once and grabbed an assist in a 3-0 home win over Scotland to earn him player of the match honors.
And speaking after the game, Kenny praised his striker’s efforts in front of a supporter audience at Dublin 4.
“I couldn’t have imagined him scoring a goal like that, but I think after watching him play as the games went on – I saw him play quite a bit towards the end of the season – his performances were the best of all our forwards,” he said.
“Yeah, I feel like people overlook the assist and only talk about the goal!” 😂

“His overall performance for Swansea towards the end of the season was the best of our strikers, if I were to rate them.
“He worked very hard for the team, but obviously his pass for Troy Parrott’s header, it was just a great combination between the two players, great play, and his goal was really a moment of immense quality. .
“It was great to see it hit the back of the net and it lifted the stadium. It was terrifying.”
In his absence, Obafemi is expected to be replaced by either Ogbene or Scott Hogan – the latter taking his place on Saturday.
Hogan may have been unlucky not to leave the Aviva scoreless, with his second-half header cleared off the line by Grant Hanley.
