In a game with huge implications for both teams, the Berlin Rebels (3-3-1) get to Dresden Saturday August 13, to face the defending champion Kings of Dresden (3-4) as the German Football League is resuming its activities after a two-week break.
The two teams are vying for the fourth and final spot in the playoffs. They’re dragging third place Berlin Adler and fourth place Cologne crocodiles who both have 4-3 records.
The last time these two faced off was on June 25, the Monarchs came away with a crucial 27-23 win in Berlin.
Since this victory, Dresden lost to the Potsdam Royals (27-23) but beat the winless Dusseldorf Panther 21-0. Berlin, on the other hand, have won three consecutive games since that defeat by beating the Panther 55-13, the Berlin Adler 49-44 and the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes 33-28.
The Monarchs will be a different team this time against the rebels with the return of starting quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels who was injured in the season opener and was expected to miss the rest of the year. He played in the win against Dusseldorf but only threw a measly 101 yards and a touchdown. However, he completed 13 of 19 passes. His presence will undoubtedly reinvigorate the offensive. showed his ability to hurt defenses with his legs as well as find receivers Isaiah Amaechi who leads the team with 31 catches for 450 yards and nine touchdowns as well as Darrell Stewart Jr (Michigan State NCAA D1) and Anthony Brooks. Running back David Baum is also a solid player and has 547 yards in seven games.
Linebackers Florian Zur Neiden and Andrew Mccleroy aim to contain a rebels attack that has lit up defenses this season.
Berlin quarterback Donovan Isom leads an exciting rebels field attack. The rebels the passing offense averaged 295.4 yards per game behind the sophomore passer who threw for 2,033 yards and 20 touchdowns. Isom’s massive 6’5 250-pound frame makes him tough to put down because he can extend plays and find receivers on the field. Isom will surely target receiver Robert Downs III who has 33 catches for 787 yards and 10 touchdowns with Nigel Westbrooks leading the team with 828 yards on 38 receptions and eight touchdowns. Fast French running back Meril Zero is also key to that explosive attack.
Defensively, veterans Daniel Docal and Paul Morant lead a rebels field defense. The two experienced defensive backs will be hoping their unit will play better as rebels are currently giving up 36.7 points per game.
