Germanys Environmental Group Nabu takes legal action against Nord Stream 2

BERLIN (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – May 3, 2021) German environmental charity Nabu filed a lawsuit against the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline on Monday, arguing that the gas link could damage the sensitive Baltic Sea marine ecosystem .
“NABU today filed a challenge against a permit that the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) issued to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline,” said a press release.
The Berlin-based organization cited alleged procedural errors in the way BSH handled objections to the Russia-led project and the German government’s climate goals as the reason for filing the lawsuit.
The lawsuit targets an underwater section of the pipeline that will be built in Germany’s Exclusive Economic Zone, which association director Joerg-Andreas Krueger says will destroy an area the size of 16 landmarks. football and will affect an area ten times the size.
A still pressing question is further whether we really need this pipeline. The project is a dinosaur of fossil infrastructure and, according to the [nonprofit] German Institute for Economic Research, it threatens the energy transition, âhe said.
Authorities in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the landing site of Nord Stream, established a green foundation in January with the aim of protecting the gas project from US sanctions aimed at killing it. The foundation’s charter describes gas as a bridge to the green transition.
