Gareth Bale: Real Madrid and Wales star tested positive for Covid-19
Welsh captain Gareth Bale is among a group of Real Madrid players who have tested positive for Covid-19.
Forwards Marco Asensio and Rodrygo and goalkeeper Andriy Lunin have also tested positive, as has assistant coach Davide Ancelotti.
Injuries have limited Bale to just three La Liga appearances for Real Madrid this season.
His most recent appearance was Wales’ 5-1 victory over Belarus last month, their 100th selection for his country.
A statement from Real read: “Real Madrid CF report that our players Asensio, Bale, Lunin and Rodrygo, and our first technical assistant Davide Ancelotti have tested positive for Covid-19.”
Speaking after the Wales League of Nations draw on Thursday, manager Robert Page said: “All I want is to wish him [Bale] good luck and wish his family good luck, make sure he doesn’t suffer too much.
“It just shows that it’s widespread. It doesn’t matter who you are, you are not protected from it.
“I just wish her luck and hope there won’t be any negative side effects.”
Asked about the importance of vaccinations, Page added: “I don’t know what its [Bale’s] vaccination record is, whether it was or not.
“I can only speak for myself and I have had both shots and a booster and have encouraged my family to do the same. That’s all I can do.
“This is my opinion. I would prefer them [players] to be vaccinated and any protection they have against it will benefit them, but that ultimately depends on them and I have to respect their decision. “
