Egypt eliminated from Futsal World Cup after Uzbekistan defeat
The Egyptian national futsal team were eliminated from the 2021 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania after losing 2-1 to Uzbekistan in the final match of the group stage.
After reaching the final of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations for the sixth time in its history in 2020, Egypt reserved its place for the Futsal World Cup alongside the winners Morocco and the Angola, third.
The World Cup finals were scheduled to take place last year but have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The tournament now takes place from September 12 to October 3, in Lithuania.
The Pharaohs found themselves in Group B alongside Russia, against which they began their journey, alongside Guatemala and Uzbekistan.
Egypt suffered a humiliating 9-0 defeat in the opener against the Russian Football Union before returning to victory against Guatemala in the second game.
In the third and final match of the group stage, Egypt came face to face with Uzbekistan, who opened the scoring after just two minutes of play.
A little over 15 minutes later, Egypt equalized through Mostafa Eid but it was not enough as Uzbekistan regained the lead in the 34th minute, for the game to end 2-1.
It should be noted that this was Uzbekistan’s very first Futsal World Cup victory and its qualification for the round of 16 is the first in its history.
After the loss, Egypt fell to the bottom of Group B with three points and a -7 goal difference, behind Russia who dominated the group, Uzbekistan who qualified in second and Guatemala.
