Bayern Munich youngster Gabriel Vidović faces tough international career call
Like VfB Stuttgart’s Borna Sosa and Bayern Munich team-mate Josip Stanisic before him, Gabriel Vidović has an extremely difficult decision ahead of him as to where he will play his international ball once he leaves the youth ranks.
Germany and Croatia are both fantastic options, but Vidović can only choose one – and his mum says the topic wasn’t easy for her son to broach. The Vidović family has resided in Germany for nearly 30 years, but the family has never forgotten their Adriatic roots.
“Our family still lives in Bosnia, we go there at least twice a year,” said Marijana Vidović. Spox. “On vacation we always go to Istria, where our relatives live.”
This aforementioned connection to the region led Gabriel Vidović to play for Croatian youth national teams at U-17, U-18, U-19 and U-21 levels. Germany, however, are very keen on the striker.
“In the U-15s he was present at a training camp for the German national team. But the Croatian association did everything for him all the time. First we canceled, but then a youth official flew to Munich and gave Gabi a Croatian jersey with the number 10. Then he moved to the Croatian association,” said Marijana Vidović. Spox.
As for finally having to choose between Croatia and Germany, it wasn’t easy for the 18-year-old.
“He hasn’t made a final decision yet. It’s a very difficult decision for him,” his mother said.
Gabriel Vidović still has time, but the pressure is mounting on the youngster. Once the striker has made a decision on which senior team he will play for – and makes an appearance for this country – he is locked in.
Croatia might offer more playing opportunities if he continues to progress, but Germany might offer more glory.
Either way, the youngster has two fantastic options.
