77 Ukrainian athletes have been killed fighting for their country
The Sports Angels website published information the other day showing 77 athletes killed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine months ago.
The list includes kickboxer Mykola Zabavchuk, rugby player Maksym Shvets, strongman Vasyl Paveliev, swimmer Volodymyr Ulianytsky, water polo coach Vitaliy Lysun, sports dancer Daria Kurdel and footballer Serhiy Balanchuk.
We have written about two American footballers who lost their lives defending their country. Igor Boyko and Alexander Akinin were killed defending their country.
Boyko was killed on June 15 in fighting near the village of Orikhove in the Donetsk region of Ukraine.
As for Alex, he was also a defender.
“Sasha” was a defender on the pitch. He was well aware of the basic rule of defense in American football – not a yard or an inch given up. Likewise, Alexander was guided by this rule in life and in war – not to cede an inch of our country to the invader. He was one of the first to volunteer to fight against all odds in the Battle of Donbass. He fought with courage and selflessness! He is the one through whom our children and our wives, our families, will live in peace. He is the one his comrades in arms will forever remember. And it is he who will be venerated in tales and legends!
Please continue to keep the Ukrainian people in your prayers. Young men and women should be enjoying the sports they love, but died defending the country they love. We pray that their families are protected and that they are safe during all attacks. May God watch over Ukraine.
